Hi everyone, itís Elicoor for the new Beyond the Machine.

Genetics Reloaded
by Elicoor

Until now, I tried to focus on small mechanics and gameplay elements, both to help new players and veterans to understand well some of the basic (but not always the most understandable) elements of the game. Now itís time for a big explanation, which is the foundation on which the rebalance of stats is built.

Gene Spread
As you all know, mutants are not all equivalent. Multiple factors happen to affect the choice of mutants youíll put in your team. Their pure attack power, their sustainability, their special abilities in adequation with their intended role in your team.

But one of the main factors when comparing two similar mutants with close stats, is their gene combination, to maximize the effects of weaknesses and resistances.

Thatís why some gene combinations are more popular than others, and it might partly explain why some mutants see more light than others.

Concordance and dissonance
As you probably know, all gene combinations are not equal by design. And as Iím talking of combinations, itís better to clearly define it here.

In Mutants, a combination of genes is a couple (A, B), where A can be any of the six genes of the game, and B can be any gene or nothing (in the case of monogene mutants). As defined, a combination (A, B) is different from (B, A).

As such, there are 42 possible combinations: 6 (first gene) x 7 (second gene or nothing).

There are basically 5 groups of mutants, depending on their gene combinations.

Combination names are based on the relative position of genes in the type wheel:

As you can all see, there are two main groups of combinations: those without weakness coverage, and those with at least a partial weakness coverage.

We chose to add a compensation bonus only for the first group, as these mutants have a disadvantage facing their weaknesses, in both attack and defense.

Gene Bonuses
All mutants from the following combinations will get bonuses to their Base Attack and Base Life.

Other mutants will not get any bonus from this patch, but they have a big enough advantage to ensure this balance update will get time to shine.

So, for instance, Chun-Lei, who has two opposed genes, will not get any bonus. On the other hand, the Forgotten One, who has two Necro genes, will get a 25% Attack Bonus and 25% Life Bonus.

Reworking the Arena

The second part of this article will be dedicated to the reworks weíre going to do. As we told you on the Facebook page, more than 10 mutants are up to be reworked. These reworks are applied to mutants that lacked some punch, and mutants that packed a little too much of it, by redefining their identity and making them less overwhelming. All changes here take account of the gene-based correction.

The fine-tuned ones

This first part will be dedicated to all these mutants that had too big an impact on the PvP, and who will get either a nerf or a reallocation of their stats.

Orion
One of the big issues with Orion is that we want it to be a glass cannon. However, at the time it was designed, it was thought it had a sufficiently low life to stay a threat. It happened to be far more powerful than expected, and this time, weíll be dropping its defensive capabilities (life and weaken power). This way, itíll still be a strong mutant, but extremely easy to drop, even with basic mutants.

Heimdall
Heimdall being graphically close to Orion, we decided to make him focus more on offensive power, at a high cost. He lost a lot of life in the process, but is now a more focused striker.

Kolossus
The massive powerhouse will take an extra strike, only affecting his special ability.
That way, his active damage potential doesnít change, but he loses out on passive damage.

Nimrod
Celsius Heroesí massive powerhouse will get a slight nerf. However, Nimrodís players wonít see the impact at all, as this nerf will only counteract the gene bonus for the titanic king. In other words, Nimrodís stats wonít change.

Buffalor
The massive beast was in need of a little nerf, however we felt it was in a good spot in terms of damage. So, we decided to reduce its life, in exchange for a slightly increased active damage.

Arachno
This one’s a long-planned design that didn’t make it on the last polls implying mutants of its generation. The cyber-spider will now be a slash-based, tankier mutant.

Thunderstruck
We needed to choose a representative for the identical-gene mutants to be reworked, and we chose to rework Thunderstruck, to give him a hybrid identity, between an active tank and a striker.

Neo-Urban XIII – Darwin – Eva’s Replication
The three character-based mutants need a buff, and they’ll all get it at the same time.

Eva was a quite fragile fast mutant, so we focused on increasing her defensive capabilities, but also giving her a slight offensive boost.

Darwin needed some extra tankiness, so we added him a increase in life, a slight attack change and a small ability decrease.

We wanted to give a more defined identity to Neo-Urban, so we decided to reduce its power at lower levels, to increase it at higher levels, to mark its growth.

Glubber
We talked a lot about gene combinations… But what about Glubber? The increase might seem massive, but don't forget that glubber can never hit on any mutant's weakness, as both its attacks are neutral.

Mad Mike
We care about Heroics, so we chose one of them. For him, it's a classic, overall boost, as it's already in a classic striker spot.

Apex
How can you claim to be the Apex of all mutants, while not even being at the top? We decided to rework him around having the best Boost power of all mutants, with a lower attack power. He’s now much stronger, unless he’s not actively fought.

Mr Marvelous
Because we didn’t forget about Reactor mutants, Mr Marvelous will get his rework. He'll now be focused on a tank build, with some extra strengthen to allow him good hits on his opponents.

Nebulus
Nebulus will get an attack and life buff, so that its Silver version could be equivalent to a good platinum mutant. After all, he's supposed to be the King of all Zodiacs.

We are looking forward to your feedback as you will have the opportunity to discover the new game balance after this update, and we'll monitor closely how the PvP is going on. And this is a first balance step for the PvP as we are going to make more changes in the next months!
