Every time I try to play an arena match I get an error about connecting to the matchmaking service. Is there anything I need to do so this doesn't happen?

Can you try to clear your App & Device cache, then play again?

Your progress should be linked to your Facebook/Nexus, so it will be saved.

I deleted the app and all its files, reinstalled and it worked for a day or two. Now it's back to a matchmaking error even after I tried reinstalling a second time

not sure what you mean by rooted

Have you tryied other phone/ another wifi? (Just for test it, im not saying you should permanently change it)

Try with cellular data?
